Events in Baden-Baden
The fixtures that come back every year, from the Christmas market around the Trinkhalle to the international race week at Iffezheim and a full opera season at the Festspielhaus.
Baden-Baden has been organized around the social calendar since the 19th century. European aristocracy did not travel here only for the thermal water; they came for the season, meaning the races, the concerts and the balls. That inheritance still shapes the year. Events are spread across all twelve months and split roughly three ways: classical music at the Festspielhaus, flat racing at Iffezheim, and seasonal festivals in the town center.
The two listed first are the ones most worth planning a trip around if you are coming from abroad. Exact dates shift from year to year, so confirm them with the official organizers before you book flights.
Christkindelsmarkt (Christmas Market)
The Christkindelsmarkt is Baden-Baden's Christmas market: wooden stalls with Glühwein, a hot spiced red wine served in a mug you pay a deposit on, roasted almonds, bratwurst and handmade ornaments. The stalls wrap around the Trinkhalle, the Kurhaus and the edge of the Lichtentaler Allee, so the whole spa quarter glows after dark. The season runs from late November into early January, which makes it one of the longest-running markets in southwest Germany and an easy pairing with a thermal bath visit.
Grosse Woche (Grand Week) at Iffezheim
Iffezheim (the racecourse about half an hour west of town) has hosted flat racing since 1858 and ranks among the classic tracks in Europe. Grosse Woche is its summer meeting: a full week of top-level thoroughbred racing where the grandstands turn into a fashion parade of hats and linen suits, much like Royal Ascot or the Kentucky Derby. It is the single biggest social event of the Baden-Baden year, so hotel rooms in town sell out months ahead.
Easter Festival (Osterfestspiele)
Since 2013 the Berlin Philharmonic has brought its Easter residency to Baden-Baden. For roughly two weeks around Easter the orchestra stages a fully produced opera plus a run of concerts at the Festspielhaus (Germany's largest opera house), and the town fills with conductors, soloists and classical-music travelers from across Europe and the US.
Spring Meeting at Iffezheim
The opening meeting of the flat-racing season at Iffezheim, the historic racecourse in the vineyards west of Baden-Baden. Smaller and more relaxed than the August week, it is the easiest way to see a German race day without the crowds, and the surrounding Rebland wine villages make a natural add-on for the afternoon.
Sales & Racing Festival (Fall Meeting)
The third race meeting of the year at Iffezheim pairs autumn racing with the largest thoroughbred auction on the European mainland. Owners, trainers and bloodstock agents fly in for the sale, and the vineyards on the drive out are in full harvest color.
Festspielhaus Season
The Festspielhaus (Germany's largest opera house, built into the shell of the old railway station and seating about 2,500) programs opera, orchestral concerts and ballet throughout the year. Touring orchestras, conductors and soloists appear on a schedule that runs from fall through early summer, so there is usually something worth booking whenever you visit.

The Christmas market season
The Christkindelsmarkt is the single biggest reason to visit Baden-Baden in winter, and it runs longer than most German Christmas markets: from late November into early January, rather than closing on December 23 the way many others do. That means the week between Christmas and New Year, when a lot of American visitors are actually free to travel, is still fully in season here.
What you get is the classic version. Wooden stalls line the colonnades around the Trinkhalle and the Kurhaus and continue along the edge of the Lichtentaler Allee park. Vendors sell Glühwein, a hot spiced red wine served in a ceramic mug you pay a small deposit on and return when you are done, along with roasted almonds, bratwurst, Flammkuchen and handmade wooden ornaments. Bring cash: many stalls do not take cards.
The pairing that makes this trip work is the market plus the thermal baths. Sitting in an outdoor thermal pool at 95 degrees Fahrenheit while it snows, then walking ten minutes to a Christmas market, is a combination very few destinations can offer.
Racing at Iffezheim
Iffezheim, the racecourse about half an hour west of town in the vineyards, has been running flat races since 1858 and counts among the classic European tracks alongside Chantilly and Baden-Baden's British counterparts. Three meetings are held each year.
The Grosse Woche, or Grand Week, in late summer is the one to aim for. It is a full week of top-level thoroughbred racing and, in equal measure, a fashion event: hats, linen, champagne, and the same crowd-watching that defines the Kentucky Derby or Royal Ascot. If your dates fall in that week, book a hotel early, because the town sells out. The Spring Meeting in May is quieter and easier to attend on short notice, and the Sales & Racing Festival in October combines autumn racing with the largest thoroughbred auction on the European mainland.
The rest of the year
Spring belongs to music. The Berlin Philharmonic has held its Easter residency in Baden-Baden since 2013, staging a full opera production plus concerts at the Festspielhaus, which is the largest opera house in Germany. The Lichtentaler Allee comes into bloom at the same time, so the park walk is at its best.
