At 2,190 feet, the Merkur is Baden-Baden's local mountain. The Merkurbergbahn funicular has run to the summit since 1913, in its present form since 1979, and counts among the longest and steepest funiculars in Germany. From the top the view opens over the town and the Rhine valley toward the Vosges mountains in France, and on the other side into the northern Black Forest.
The summit is the hub of a dense network of hiking trails, a favorite launch site for paragliders, and home to a lookout tower plus a restaurant. A common plan is to hike up through the woods and ride the funicular back down, or the reverse if you would rather earn the descent than the climb.

- A city bus runs to the valley station, where the funicular takes over for the climb.
- Sturdy shoes pay off on the summit trails, which are rooty and steep in places.
- The lookout tower and the summit restaurant make it easy to stay a while.
