Badische Weinstraße (Baden Wine Route)

West of the city, in the wine district known as the Rebland with the villages of Varnhalt, Neuweier and Steinbach, Baden-Baden's vineyards climb the slopes. They belong to the Baden growing region and are known above all for Riesling and Spätburgunder, the German name for Pinot Noir. In Neuweier the wines are traditionally bottled in the Bocksbeutel, a flat, rounded bottle used in only a handful of places in Germany.

Between the vine rows you find family estates and Straußwirtschaften, seasonal taverns that growers are allowed to run in their own farmhouses for a few weeks a year, plus panoramic walking routes with long views over the Rhine plain toward the Vosges. The Badische Weinstraße strings the wine villages together into one scenic route.
