The Neues Schloss (New Castle) sits on the slope above the old town and served from the 15th century as the residence of the Margraves of Baden, who moved down here after giving up the older hilltop fortress of Hohenbaden. Rebuilt in the Renaissance and altered several times since, it still anchors the skyline of the city.
From the castle terrace the view runs across the roofs of the old town and the Stiftskirche (the collegiate church) and on to the wooded hills of the Black Forest. The castle is in private hands, so the interiors open only on limited occasions, but the terrace view from outside is free.

- The climb up through the old town to the Schlossberg is worth it for the view alone.
- Interior access is restricted; the tourist information office has the current status.
- Combine it with a wander through the historic old town and the Stiftskirche.
