With around 2,500 seats, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden is the largest opera and concert house in Germany and one of the most important in Europe. It opened in 1998 and grafts a modern auditorium onto the landmarked railway station of 1904, so you buy your ticket under a Belle Epoque roof and then walk into a contemporary hall behind it.
The house is privately funded and keeps no resident company. Instead it books leading international orchestras, conductors and soloists for short runs, which gives a town of 55,000 people a program closer to that of a capital city. Its acoustics are the other reason musicians keep coming back.
