The Museum Frieder Burda shows modern and contemporary art from the collection of the German publisher and art collector Frieder Burda. The bright white, light-flooded building by the American architect Richard Meier opened in 2004 directly on the Lichtentaler Allee and is a piece of architecture worth the visit on its own.
The holdings run from German Expressionism through Abstract Expressionism to the present, with works by Beckmann and Picasso alongside Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke. Rotating special exhibitions fill out the program, and a glass walkway connects the museum to the neighboring Staatliche Kunsthalle, so the two can be seen in one go.
